This course will present strategies for teaching expository writing in all content areas in grades K-12. Instructional guidelines will be presented for developing complex sentences; outlining; writing paragraphs and compositions; and revising and editing. It offers specific techniques to add structure, coherence and clarity to students’ expository writing. This writing program, Teaching Basic Writing Skills, can be implemented in general classrooms and special settings and instruction can be adapted for large classrooms, resource rooms, or tutorials.

Judith C. Hochman, Ed.D., will conduct an Expository Writing Instruction Workshop at the Pennsylvania Branch of the International Dyslexia Association (PIDBA) on October 14. This Workshop will present strategies for expository writing instruction in all content areas from the primary grades through high school. “Study Skills and the Research Process,” a presentation by Betsy Duffy and Lisa Bambino of the Windward School, will be presented at The International Dyslexia Association’s 61st Annual Conference, Reading, Literacy and Learning, on October 27-30, 2010.
Study Skills, based in part on Teaching Basic Writing Skills, is a sequential course for middle and high school students, which utilizes direct instruction and the research process to teach the study skills necessary for future academic success. A student research presentation based on the Windward School Study Skills Program recently won the esteemed Student Research Award presented by the New York State Archives.Themes addressed include: critical reading skills, oral Language, text comprehension, vocabulary and written expression.
